Don’t Give Up — HR Song of the Week

Peter Gabriel’s Don’t Give Up is a song that will do us all some good. Though the song is about someone who is down and out, its beat and lyrics are uplifting, and most of us need to be uplifted these days. “Don’t give up ’cause you have friends, don’t give up, you’re not beaten  yet . . . Though I saw it all around, never thought I could be affected, thought that we’d be the last to go. It is so strange the way things turn . . . Don’t give up ’cause I believe there’s a place where we belong.” Kate Bush joins Gabriel to sing this song in the video below.

  1. John: As an avid Peter Gabriel fan, I applaud your choice in songs. But you have made a grave error that must be corrected.

While Kate Bush did, in fact, sing on the original version in the “So” album (and she too is a terrific singer), on Peter’s Secret World Live tour, he discovered a great artist who was heretofore unknown, named Paula Cole. Ms. Cole, as you may recall, later recorded Where Have All the Cowboys Gone, and other songs in the late 90s. This version is outstanding, however, and no slight against Ms. Bush.

I think a full correction to your readers ought to be published. Or at least a link to the Kate version too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiCRZLr9oRw

  2. Dan,

Always good to hear from a fan of someone who performs the HR Song of the Week.

I didn’t know the history as you described it, and I appreciate your clearing that up.

I’m not always able to do this with the post I do on the HR Song of the Week, but I much prefer to use something that’s performed live. I was lucky to do so with Gabriel and Bush on the video I posted. Even if I had seen the YouTube clip in your comment, I would have still gone with the one I did because it’s a live performance — despite the grave error it somehow caused.

As to a corrrection, I can’t imagine a better one than your comment. It’s well written and to the point. Plus, you included the YouTube video you recommend that readers should view rather than the one I posted.

Thanks very much for your comment.

    John

  3. I’m just glad you didn’t suggest Gabriel’s “Kiss That Frog” song. Would’ve had some trouble there….
