The New Normal?
According to an article in the New York Times, a few of the unemployed are beginning to find new jobs. A few businesses are expanding. And a few businesses are hiring. However, the few jobs being created and filled are low paying. In other words, if an employee is fortunate enough to find a job today, he will be making less than he was in his previous job. This seems to be what’s ahead in a post-recession world.
Even before the Great Recession started, the trend in job creation was toward bottom-heavy, low-paying jobs. According to some economists, this trend will continue and will virtually eliminate “middle-skill, middle-wage” jobs. Thus, when the unemployed slowly begin to find jobs, they will be making considerably less than they were making pre-recession.
It’s too early to know this for sure, particularly for those who can’t find any kind of job. If the new normal means, for the most part, lower paying jobs and a diminished standard of living, the economic recovery will never come for many employees who used to earn a medium income with a quality job.
