Dress Codes: Revisions Coming
I have done a number of posts on the legalities and practicalities of workplace dress codes. If you want a review of them, click here and scroll down. You’ll find more than 20 posts on dress codes or appearance policies. Thirty years ago, The Official Preppy Handbook gave employers a model from which to work and dress. The book has been out of print for 15 years, so employers have had to stumble and bumble to write and revise meaningful dress policies.
Not to worry. The Prep is in the works. It’s a follow-up (a sequel, if you will) to the original. The Official Preppy Handbook was written to mock prep-school culture and those adults who, having attended prep-schools, transported preppy dress into the real world. Surprisingly, many readers took it seriously. It became a bible to some. It changed lives. Eventually, it became a guidebook to hip employers and their employees.
If you’re thinking of writing or revising a dress code or appearance policy, don’t waste your time. The Prep will be out in September. You’re work is being done for you at this very moment.
