Women Outpace Men in Jobs Race

According to USA Today, women are pulling even with men in one workplace measurement. They’re on the verge of outnumbering men in the workforce for the first time ever. The most recent numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that women hold 49.83% of the country’s 132 million jobs. Women are projected to become the majority of workers in the U.S. before the end of the year.

There has been a steadily growing number of women in the workplace for decades. This growth has accelerated during the recession. Through June, 74% of the 6.4 million jobs lost were held by men. The only parts of the economy still growing are health care, education and government, traditionally areas where large numbers of women are employed. The Postal Service is cutting tens of thousands of blue collar jobs held by men while hiring in fields dominated by women. Local governments have eliminated 86,000 men from jobs while adding 167,000 women.

The recent news isn’t all good for women. On average, women work fewer hours than men, hold more part-time jobs, and earn 77% of what men make. Also, the higher paying executive jobs are still primarily filled by men.

Women have come a long way, baby, but still have a ways to go.

  1. And there you have your explanation. If we have more women working right now it is because in general they get paid less.

  2. John Phillips says:

Nothing gets by you, does it, Nae?

  3. And to the young men getting out of school, have fun getting a job…EEOC: Women and minorities encouraged to apply (really means women are encouraged.)
