Dress Codes, Make Way for Hats
I’ve done my share of posting on dress codes and appearance policies. It’s fair to say that I’ve been critical of the casual trend sweeping all workplaces and have expressed a longing for the return to proper, more formal attire and appearance (male-female divide, more on male-female divide, necktie, more on necktie, woman’s slip, short pants for men, tattoos, tattoo removal, cleavage, economic effects, clothing and the inner soul, clothing for the unemployed, facial hair, naked Fridays, and office party clothing.)
Michael Wade of Execupundit calls our attention to a Wall Street Journal article holding out hope that hats for men might be making a comeback. I remember, as a child, the heads of many, maybe most, men were covered when they went to work. My dad loved hats, and I remember going with him to haberdasheries to acquire new ones. I still have his LBJ. The principal industry in my small hometown when I was growing up was the hat factory.
I have a feeling that the hats for men of my childhood are unlikely to return, but this trip down memory lane has made my day. It has also bolstered my view that a return to coats, ties and dresses would be a very good thing for most modern workplaces.
