CEO Hiring Advice
The New York Times contains an interesting interview with Richard Anderson, the CEO of Delta Air Lines. It covers major impacts on his career, good management and leadership books, running meetings and much more.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the interview dealt with Anderson’s approach to hiring. What he says makes a lot of sense and can lead to better hires being made. The only caveat is that his emphasis on exploring with a candidate her family background should be carefully considered. While I agree that this kind of inquiry can lead to valuable information in evaluating prospects and making hiring decisions, it can also lead to questions that border on the unlawful.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t follow Anderson’s advice. It just means you should be mindful of the issues involving protected classes under federal and state law and make sure that your questions are tailored to stay clear of those issues, to focus on job-related qualities, and to hire the best qualified person.
