Layoffs and Flexibility — Tip of the Week

I’ve done more than a few posts on the general inadvisability of layoffs, despite our economic downturn. (Click here for a post that links to several other posts.) If anyone is reading them, they’re not paying attention, or I’ve failed to sufficiently make my case.

When reading a recent post by Andria Martinelli of the Delaware Employment Law Blog about flexible schedules, it occurred to me that while I’ve encouraged employers to be flexible in trying to avoid layoffs, I haven’t specifically focused on flexible schedules as an alternative to the L-word. A flexible schedule won’t be an alternative for all employers, but it’s another idea to add to the list. Instead of laying off first and asking questions later, consider a flexible schedule as one more possible way to avoid or minimize layoffs in your workplace.

Andria’s post is a great read. She doesn’t deal with flexible schedules in the context of layoffs but in the context of dealing positively with employee-parents (particularly women) who have small children. It’s one of the most thoughtful, balanced looks at what should be a growing trend among employers in our society.
