Unions Ready to Flex Muscle
According to the New York Times, organized labor, liberal bloggers, and MoveOn.org are teaming up in an avowed effort to recruit liberal Democrats to challenge incumbent moderate Democrats. Yes, that’s right. They’re not going after Republicans yet. They’re going to cleanse Democrats of non-ideologues.
They can do whatever they want, of course, this being America and all, but I’m wondering if we’re hearing a bit of delusional thinking. I’m OK with people on the far left, the far right, and the deep center. Everyone’s voice deserves to be heard.
But the last time I checked, our economy is on the verge of collapse. Given the global implications of what we’re facing right now, it’s arguable that the thing we keep calling a recession is already worse than the Great Depression. And our union friends and their allies think it’s time to push hard to the left?
Our crisis today, affecting all employers and employees, won’t be solved by ideology. It’ll be solved by people of all persuasions working together for the common good and a whole lot of luck.
I’m just as disillusioned with conservatives and Republicans. Almost to a person, they are opposing anything proposed by the Obama administration. Of course, they claim they’re being railroaded by the new Democratic majority. This all sounds depressingly familiar.
The party in power has changed, but nothing else has. It’s like the hardships being shouldered by employers and employees are part of a game that we’re all paying big money to watch — perhaps the last money we have.
