Ramirez to Become Cobbler?

Something surreal happens every day. According to the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Dodgers are making their fourth run at signing the enigmatic, big-headed Manny Ramirez. Basically, the Dodgers are still willing to pay Ramirez $40-$45 million for two years.

The remainder of the Post article reports on a litany of players who can’t or might not play during the coming season because of injuries. Call me conservative, but if I were a relatively healthy Manny, I’d take the money and run.

In the same issue of the Post, there’s another article that makes Manny’s predicament even more surreal. It’s about the comeback cobblers are making in these hard times. People are getting their shoes repaired instead of buying new ones. Thought to be on its last legs (or shoes) by some, this honorable vocation may have found recession-based new life.

So, Manny, if you decide that no one’s willing to pay you what you’re worth to play baseball or if you get hurt or if you have an epiphany that it’s time to start doing something honorable, become a cobbler. You’re just in time to catch the cobbler’s new wave of success.
