The Layoff Business

This post contains information that should come as no surprise. It goes to show that someone’s bad news can be someone else’s good news.

According to a recent article in the New York Times, the layoff business was the business to be in during 2008 and will be again during 2009. Businesses specializing in “career transition” are swamped. Right Management had a 39% increase in profit in ’08. Ayers Group saw a 75% spike in its career transition work last year.

If my previous posts (click here, here, here, here, here, and here) urging the consideration of alternatives to layoffs haven’t convinced you, and your employer plans to layoff employees in ’09, this article is worth the read. I’m sure some career transition companies are better than others, but the Times article points to several ways such a company can ease the pain of a layoff and help an employee to move ahead.

This isn’t as good as keeping a job, but it’s better than being shown the door with no help in sight.
