Johnson on Gladness

Samuel Johnson (Dr. Johnson, if you prefer) made lasting contributions to English literature in many ways. He’s sometimes described as the most distinguished man of letters in English history.

Whether or not he was that, he wrote lots of things worth repeating, including the following:

“Pleasure is very seldom found where it is sought; our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks.”
