Reality Enters Twilight Zone

Under pressure from inside and outside Merrill Lynch, John Thain, Merrill’s CEO, has decided to “voluntarily” forgo a bonus for 2008, according to the Wall Street Journal. It’s clear that he didn’t like it, and corporate boards are famous for making bonuses up to executives in other ways that the public never knows about — unless they hire a team of lawyers and accountants to scrutinize proxy and financial statements. It’s heartening, at least for now, to see that Mr. Thain has decided to suffer with the rest of us.
