Getting Through the Tough Times: Reminiscences of the Great Depression

The Wall Street Journal’s sobering article about the reminiscences of several people who lived through the Great Depression makes one wonder how close we are to another one.  I’m amused that some people, even economists, still speculate about whether we’re in a recession yet. Though no one wants to go there, the only thing left to speculate about is whether we’re headed for another depression.

The remembrances of these depression veterans provide plenty of things to ponder. There’s some advice. There’s some wisdom. There’s some humor. One of the questions raised by one of the depression-era surviviors is whether a nation so accustomed to relative prosperity for so long has the mettle to endure a 30′s-like depression. The truth is we don’t know, and we hope we don’t have to find out.
