Paid Parental Leave Around the Corner?
Probably not around the corner, but the drumbeat for it may get louder. As an article in the Washington Postpoints out, Congress is considering a bill that would mandate paid parental leave for federal employees. It’s kind of bogged down, but this is the kind of issue the November election just might unbog–not just for federal employees but for private employees as well.
The story of the federal employee told in the article is compelling. Dealing with her situation (multiplied by hundreds of comparable situations) is also expensive. It’s unlikely the issue will go away. So what do you do? Nothing? Wait on the government to decide? Talk with other employers about what they’re doing or considering? Take the bull by the horns yourself? That’s for you to answer. At the very least, you should start talking about it.
