Could he be fired?
Eliot Spitzer, that is, the governor of New York. If you haven’t heard yet, click here and here.
I don’t know how removing a sitting governor works in New York, so I don’t know the answer to this question. But it appears that Governor Spitzer has been implicated in the crackdown on a prostitution ring in the Big Apple (and he wasn’t prosecuting the prostitutes).
A CEO could be fired for this sort of thing, if this sort of thing turns out to be a crime. In the case of a CEO, even if there’s no crime, the embarrassment caused to the CEO’s company would be enough to justify a discharge.
But let’s not guess too much here. We’ll try to draw some employment lessons from the governor’s bad luck as the story unfolds. As you’ll see from reading the New York Times article, Spitzer was no 007.
