Tell me about yourself

During an interview, it’s not all that uncommon for the person conducting the interview to begin by saying, “Tell me about yourself.” Have you ever had an applicant respond like the applicant on this YouTube clip?

  1. I once worked for an exec who started every interview with: “Starting with the first job you ever had, tell me about your work history. Include everything you think I should know.”

Then he just sat back and let it flow. If an applicant asked him a question for clarification, such as “I used to babysit when I was 12, does that count?” he would simply shrug his shoulders and remain silent.

Interviews typically lasted 2 minutes or 2 hours… rarely anything in between.

  2. I’m now beginning to understand how you are so wise.
