Suicides

How’s that for a title?

In an article in today’s New York Times, the mystery of why the number of suicides among middle aged Americans increased rather dramatically from 1999 to 2004 is considered.  The subject of suicide has long been regarded as one of the most complex there is, and now attention is focused on why it’s happening at an increasing rate in the 45 to 54 age group.

One of the surprising things about this article is that work is not mentioned at all (except for listing ”unemployment” as one of the ususal reasons, but with no further discussion)–which is odd.  It seems to me that the pressures of a job–any job–must be analyzed as part of this subject.  I raise this, because human resources professionals must always remember the “human” part of their profession.
