Immigration laws win court approval.

As reported in the New York Times, three recent court decisions have given a boost to state and local governments seeking to get tougher on illegal immigrants.  In Arizona and Oklahoma, state statutes have been upheld.  In Missouri, a city ordinance has been upheld.  These victories are likely to bolster efforts in other states to toughen up immigration laws.

It remains to be seen whether the U.S. Congress will be able to come to agreement on national legislation.  That’s not likely until after the November elections during which the immigration issue is likely to get hotter.

In the meantime, state and local governments will proceed with their own laws, which means that employers will be required to take extra steps to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the workplace.  For employers with multiple operations in different states, you need to make sure you have a handle on what the immigration law requires in each state.
