Firing, Tears, and More

Another college basketball coach is gone.  Unlike Bobby Knight’s resignation, John Brady, head coach at Louisiana State University for the last eleven years, was fired.  Brady wasn’t as successful from a bottom line standpoint as Knight.  He did take LSU to the Final Four and was the third winningest coach in LSU history.  But no national championships and no 900 wins.

At the press conference called to announce the mid-season firing of Brady, LSU’s athletic director (who had said three weeks ago that he would evaluate Brady at the end of the season) explained the reason he fired Brady now was to be fair to the coach and the players.  Well, of course.  A gracious but emotional Brady spoke through tears at the press conference.  His wife cried.  His players were shocked.

Read the article in The Times-Picayune, and you decide whether this is the way to handle a discharge.  We’re learning a lot from college basketball these days.
