So, John, are you compiling a list? I’d love to see it.
I’d nominate an entire album based on its title — Workingman’s Dead by the Grateful Dead, though the real work song on it is “Cumberland Blues,” live versions (e.g., Europe ’72) probably being better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dodsdVCE1RA
My son plays a great jazz tune with his school jazz band called “Work Song” by Nat Adderley (no lyrics). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBxAC4ywaJ4
I suspect one could make a huge list, as work, though far behind love and heartbreak, is a pretty frequent song subject.
Oh, don’t forget 16 Tons!
George,
Thanks for the suggestions. There is a very l0ng list of work songs. I’ve been surprised at how many there are. As you say, though, work is a pretty frequent song subject. Sixteen Tons was the second song (I think) I posted, with Take This Job and Shove It being the first. Thanks again.
