Embezzling at Work
Embezzlement in the workplace is nothing new. Since it is nothing new, we can sometimes become a bit lax in the enforcement of our checks and balances and in the kind of monitoring we have in place to prevent it.
How long does it take to embezzle $50 million? Apparently about 20 years. At least, that’s the allegation about an employee in the DC Office of Tax and Revenue.
One might say that it’s easier to embezzle in a government office because of the bureaucracy and because the bureaucrats don’t pay enough attention to this sort of thing. Maybe. But you’re not saying that your business or organization is free of bureaucracy, are you? And you’re not saying that some things in your business or organization aren’t allowed to slide or that some employees aren’t cut more slack than others when it comes to money issues, are you?
Take a look at this situation. Maybe it’s time to make sure your financial policies and procedures are thorough and are being fully enforced.
