Wilkie on Freedom (and Equal Opportunity)
Given the news has been filled with politics, politics, politics, it seemed appropriate for our quote this week to be from a politician. It comes from the Republican presidential nominee in 1940, although he was hardly a typical politician.
Wendell Wilkie received the nomination, despite having never previously held an elected political office. Franklin Roosevelt trounced him, but Wilkie said something in the course of the election that could be viewed as an early equal employment opportunity policy, well before such things were used by or required of employers.
“Freedom is an indivisible word. If we want to enjoy it and fight for it, we must be prepared to extend it to everyone, whether they are rich or poor, whether they agree with us or not, no matter what their race or the color of their skin.”
